So in love, so blinded by his charms, Abby never thought twice about danger.  She just closed her eyes and walked right into the hornets’ nest, freely accepting the consequences that came with being Dorian’s One.  A thirst for his love and attention were enough to satisfy her need.

Picture
EXCERPT:

Dammit to hell. I can’t even enjoy a movie.

The nighttime air bit at my skin as thoughts of him chomped at my brain. He’d polluted me like a poison that spread throughout my mind and body, seizing every thought, leaving no rest. I loved horror movies and yet I couldn’t recall a single scene. Jimmie kept glancing at me, concern etching his face all the way through the ninety-minute show.

Soon Jimmie and I walked out of the theater, my hand resting in the crook of his elbow. Bitterness raged inside, heating my face against the breeze when I saw the limo roll toward us. He found me like he always said he would, but three fucking hours late.

I knew I wasn’t Dorian’s top priority, and I’d made some progress at keeping my jealousy under control, but no woman wanted to be shoved to the side every time it was convenient for a man. I tightened my grip on Jimmie’s sleeve and pulled him along just as the driver stepped into our path. I gave the chauffeur a shotgun-glare as he motioned me to the car. “Miss Torrance, Mr. Lincoln is waiting.”

My heart skipped ten beats, I couldn’t tear my eyes away when the dark window lowered and Dorian tousled his ebony hair with his fingers. He wasn’t in his usual attire, a business suit. Tonight he presented himself in casual wear. His sharp, handsome features were expressionless.

I closed my eyes, digging deep for the strength to tell him to get lost for standing me up, but I knew the words would never make it past my lips. I was a fool to entertain the thought. One look from those black eyes sifted me like wheat. Dorian practically owned me. That man was my tempter and my savior wrapped into one.

I met him at the lowest point of my life, after my mother died of cancer. The three jobs I was working to keep my head above water and pay off her medical bills were about to do me in physically. While I was waiting tables at the country club, Dorian swooped in from out of nowhere and rescued me like an injured bird. His amazing sixth sense alerted him that life was too much for me, and he offered me a strong shoulder to cry on. The floodgates opened and I unloaded my personal problems. Dorian Lincoln promised those problems would disappear with a simple acceptance of his proposition: give him power over my body, something Bianca wouldn’t allow.

Lifting my palm to Jimmie’s cheek, I smiled. “Thanks for the movie. I’ll call you next week.”

“He’s a prick. You deserve better, Abby!” Jimmie yelled, as I eased myself inside the limo.

Dorian opened a small refrigerator under the seat, his hands cupping the base of a champagne glass. “You’ve wasted no time finding another way of entertaining yourself this evening.”

“You wasted no time in standing me up,” I scoffed.

When I left his office that afternoon, Dorian said he wanted me for some ‘quality time.’ Eight-thirty rolled around before I realized he was a no-show. The food got cold and eventually the long stemmed candles I lit for dinner burned out, along with my patience.

“Meetings...clients,” he said.

Top secret meetings and clients were always the excuse. The coldness in his voice was a sword to my heart, a reminder of my temporary ranking in his life. I held on tight to his promise of our relationship becoming more when the time was right.

His stony expression broke into a devious grin. “You look beautiful in that dress and your enthusiasm is charming. But watching you masturbate will reimburse me, Miss Torrance.”

My stomach dropped and quivered as I pressed my thighs together. He was going to punish me.

I tugged at the straps of the red shoes he’d bought me, eyeing him as he sipped from the flute and moved his gaze toward the window. Overtaken by the need to be the object of his fascination, I almost begged him to turn those onyx eyes back on me. His attention was the only thing that kept me from going under.

“Dorian, please I-”

My words were cut off with the sharp turn of his head. Relief came in a warm caress, but suspicion moved in with a lift of his brow. The small amount of light coming through the tinted windows deepened the masculine angles of his face, lending them a sternness that echoed in his voice.

“No other men. I thought I was quite clear about that when we discussed the terms of our agreement, three months ago.”

“Jimmie is just a friend.”

“Jimmie is a man. A distraction.”

“A distraction from being pissed. I don’t like being stood up.”

Synopsis:

Like everyone else after the economic crash, Abby Torrance was struggling financially.  But then Dorian Lincoln, a political and business icon, sweeps her off her feet and into a life of promise. He’s a man who has enough power to change the world for the better, a man who can give hope to the masses, a man who can give Abby a baby.

But the road to Hell is paved with good intentions and Abby is having strange dreams that seem both a warning and a prophesy. How can she give the evil undertones of her dreams any notice when she’s busy focusing on conceiving?

This is where I insert that song "Back in the Saddle again..." I haven't published anything in a good long time. And quite honestly I wrote the beginnings of this short in August of last year. So now you are thinking what the heck took her so long to publish it? It is only about 4k words. Well I knew sooner or later I would get a job and I have. YAY me!

And I am glad I anticipated it and have a couple of semi finished pieces because even getting this small piece out took a long time. I wanted it published in April, but May first was good enough for me. I feel like I was pretty close to target. I am one of those people that if I say I am going to do something I deliver.

So this piece, you might notice on Amazon is not listed under erotica (gasp? er what?) Nope not erotica. It has sex, explicit sex and a spanking scene, but not erotica. Let's see what trouble I get into. ;)

Blurb (that honestly I am not truly in love with. So if you read it and have a suggestion I'm all ears!):
Laura thinks she's going on vacation for a beach and sun filled getaway where she can be alone...then HE comes barging out of the water. She has to do a double take...but who is he charging toward like a bull raging with flames bursting from his ears?

“He” is her ex-sister in law's ex-husband...basically a really hot ex family member that she found herself having really bad thoughts about on a regular occasion, even when she was merely dating her ex-husband.

What does fate have in store for Laura and Russell? And why the hell is he so pissed off?

Contains sexually explicit material and a spanking scene – this work of fiction is for adults. The full length of this short story is over 4,000 words.

It is just 99 cents!

If you have a thing for spanking, ahem, I do have "Being Neighborly" which is a very short and very, um, hot, free piece. My last release was "Erotic Fantasies" which is still hitting charts. Despite our want to make it free it is a jam-packed booked with a ton of talent. Your 99 cents will be well spent. My piece, Blue Bird, is a D/s story and of course has a spanking or two in it. Rules and why BDSM isn't abuse @JoelleCasteel blog hop re-release Out of the Night: Book One

I have Joelle Casteel on my blog today! She is re-releasing her book Out of the Night: Book One. She has been sharing snippets about this book on the Sat Spanks blog hop for some time and it's quite intriguing. It is a world constructed like no other I've read so far. It's fantasy with Dominance and Submission combined. Read on to see come excerpts...

Picture
It's day 5 on my blog tour for the re-release of "Out of the Night: Book One" of my Vala's Story serial. Please visit this page if you want to catch up on missed posts. Thank you, Suzy, for hosting me.

First I want to share two snippets of extra-novel fiction I wrote just for this post.

Mother grabbed Mearr by the upper arm, the skin turning white with the force. She screamed. "You aren't going to school dressed like that! You know pants and make up are against my rules, you slut."

"Your rules are absurd. No one else at my school has stupid rules like yours." Mearr glared at her mother. Why had she been cursed with such horrible parents?

"I don't care what those other children are allowed. Go fix yourself now!"

Mearr ran up the stairs to her bedroom and slammed the door behind her. She was within the school dress code; why was her mother such a bitch? She'd put on the skirt and just change at school again. Bitch would never know the difference.

--

The Queen held Vala with an intense stare. "The first and most important rule for my slaves is not to lie to me. I value truthfulness." He dragged his finger down her chest, stopping on her stomach. "However I do sometimes think the Christians have it right that confession is good for the soul. I may punish less if the truth is quickly told me. I might."

Vala licked her lips. "I can live with that rule, my Queen. After spending so much time lying to my mother for my father, I think I should enjoy the chance to always be truthful."

"I hope so." The Queen leaned in to kiss Vala. "Lies found out tend to earn the liars my harshest punishments."

So do you wanna argue with me that Mearr is a child being told a rule by her parent (she's a teen there BTW) and Vala years later is a young adult (about 19 years old) talking to The Queen as another adult? So the two aren't a correct comparison? I don't agree- with those who think that's the case. However the point between these two snippets is not about who is making and enforcing the rules, but about consent and negotiation. Can you imagine Mearr talking to her mother about the rules about dress? Nope, I can't either. But The Queen, who longs to be in a BDSM Master/slave relationship with Vala, is engaging her in conversation about his rules and gives her the space to say if she can live with that first and most important rule of his. The subject of rules and obedience actually takes the center stage of conversation during a lesson of Vala's in the second book in the serial, "Gates of the Garden: Book Two" (expected release date in the next month or so)

Now I want to move from the notion of rules to abuse. You might only see a teen and her mother disagreeing in that snippet above, but what Mearr and her mother have is an abusive relationship. She actually starts out her story living in a coffeehouse after having run away from her parents' abuse. Like I have joked that I'm not the poster child any movement would want, I think Vala would joke the same. Like the stereotype of a BDSM person, she does have abuse and rape in her personal history. But the difference with The Queen and his leather family is that there is consent, negotiation, and the ability to leave. If you search on the Internet "BDSM versus abuse," you'll find dozens of charts, graphs etc that compare the two. I recommend the exercise :D. It may look like (to the untrained eye, unfamiliar with BDSM) that Mearr has escaped the desperation of drug use, prostitution, and living on the street only to be beaten and told what to do, to people who understand and enjoy BDSM, the freedoms The Queen gives Vala are many. He helps her to get healthy, to rename herself with a name she prefers to her birth name, by exposing her widely to all sorts of sexual activity in controlled, safe environments, he helps her to find out more about her sexuality and what she enjoys.

Excerpt from "Out of the Night: Book One" Copyright Joelle Casteel 2007-2014

"You are incredibly beautiful and desirable. I want to help you to become even more so if you will let me mold you." His hand on her cheek, his gaze went down to her stomach to see a multitude of tiny, jagged scars on her stomach.

"Mold me?" A touch of hysteria crept into her voice as she struggled out of his arms. "My mother wanted to mold me into the 'perfect' Christian and she tried to beat and lecture me into the perfect mold. Are you gonna do that too? Beat me into whatever mold you want?"

"No, Mearr. That is not what I meant. I want to help you to become what you want to be."

"Why should I trust you?"

"You should only trust me if I prove to be trustworthy in your eyes." He knelt in front of her. "I want to help you. I want to take you in my arms and hold you until you feel safe, until you feel okay again." He looked up at her from his knees.

"Out of the Night: Book One" blurb

Restless and world-weary, Mearr isn't about to admit she needs anyone's help, even this gorgeous man who has taken her into his home. Well one of his homes and part of this huge family she's heard about but not met all of. She's young, looks young, and knows it but at least she's legal now so she can pick a new name to go with her new life...

The Queen knows he wants Mearr bad, ever since the first time he saw her in the window of the coffeehouse. He has his plan, but even a Dominant's plans don't always survive the unpredictability of the future. He struggles to figure out this temperamental woman he's brought home, how best to help her. Then he takes her to his mansion...

They wait patiently for The Queen to bring Mearr home. Well to the home they've been redecorating for Him and for the hopes that she'll become part of their family and be trained to please Him. Simon and Tommy have seen her, of course, being The Queen's right and left hands; they say she'll be a perfect addition...

Please come along with Joelle on this journey, shared with the readers in serial fashion. A multitude of "Happily-ever-afters" are waiting with the completion of book 9.

Author's Note: This novel is meant for open-minded adults. Activities described include a wide range of BDSM and sexual activities, some of which are male/male, male/female, consensual slavery, oral/anal/vaginal intercourse, bondage. The story also covers some sensitive topics in characters' backstories, such as drug abuse.

Joelle's Bio:

Joelle Casteel has been writing for as long as she can remember. Explicit, graphic, her writing isn't for minors or the easily offended. Once upon a time, she preferred to write on a PC, sitting on a stool- there were those who told her she looked like Tori Amos playing the piano. She's still trying to get the hang of writing in an arm chair instead, normally with a heavy dog's head resting on her feet, whether she wants that or not. With BDSM gaining a broader audience with various books- which she will not name because she can't stand them- she feels it's past time to put out her impression of what BDSM can look like in reality.

I was invited by Ms Paige Matthews. She basically tied me up (or was it down), anyway, she forced me to do this…KIDDING! I don’t often like to talk about myself, so I decided I would do this to share a little about the craziness that is me.

I try to make each piece different: from POV, to content, but really the characters decide what they want to be. I am always trying to challenge and better myself and I believe reading is a great way to do this. Paige and I share a review page. She has mainly been doing promotions due to her hectic work/life schedule. And until I get a RLJ I am reviewing a lot. I love to read and do so at a fast pace. She asked if she could jump on board with me and I was excited with the idea.

So without further ado…

1 - What am I working on?

Well that’s a loaded question. This could be a very long answer. Basically, the short of it is normally I am working on at least 4-5 books at any given time. That is the writing, editing or typing stages in all of them. I am also a huge promoter of others and marketer.

Current things on this girl’s author plate (yes this is typical):

1. Re-editing my fantasy books and then they are being sent to an editor so they can be put into print.

2. Typing up The Sixth Element, which is the 3rd book in my fantasy series—ELEMENTS ~ The Before World (yes, I write things by hand in notebooks)

3. Saving Lady J, this story has been featured on my blog in SatSpanks with excerpts. I am fleshing it out a bit. I’d like to enter this into the BDSM writers con contest, however I am worried it doesn’t quite fit into a specific category.

4. DREAMSTEALER (this is a serial killer, paranormal romance book that will be under another pen name)

5. An untitled book that I write each night before bed, it is a D/s story full of confliction.

6. Critiquing / editing, A Taylor Made Master for Carrie Ann Ward

7. Two free anthologies to be released this month. One is entitled Erotic Fantasies, which features my D/s story Blue Bird.

8. Reading Kingdom and next up is Guardians of the Forest for my review page, PS Naughty Reviewers.

9. My other Blogs: I randomly write poetry and erotic Free Reads or The Foodie in Me posts.

10. I am putting together another free anthology, since Sexy Holiday Bites was such a success. This time it will be full length stories approximately 5k or less. And it will be darker…hey, it’s for Halloween. ;) Mine is titled IN HEAT

11. Um, do I admit I had a dream the other night about a wolf/shifter pack…oh man…

2 - How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I write erotica explicitly and I’ve been told that I pull the reader into the erotic event. I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you very much.

My fantasy books have both hit the Amazon Bestseller list! Wooohooo! Ok anyway, people have loved the dreamy quality of the style and the romance. The heat sizzles to a rolling boil throughout the series. Infidelity and possession make it difficult for the characters to determine if it’s lust, love or magic. These books are sexy hot, however, they are not erotic.

3 - Why do I write what I do?

I love it! It’s my sanity in this insane world. I never planned to write anything erotic, but Cristal Blue would not leave me alone. She turned out to be a huge hit. ;)

4 - How does my writing process work?

I have this weird thing where I just write. I don’t plan, outline or character develop—whatever those things are (giggles). I just write. Stories somehow emerge and twist into climax and endings all on their own. I’ve been compared to Stephen King, because I guess he does the same thing. (another thing I realized I do like him—um yeah, he’s like my author idol—I write all of my works with settings in New England. Well, my fantasy heroine is from Wellfleet, MA. A town near where I grew up, but the story takes place in Virginia.)

People ask me where the stories come from…Dreams, daydreams, that time right before you fall asleep. My mind never shuts off. People say they wish they had my problem instead of writers block…but no, no you don’t. I can’t keep up with it.

John Satisfy eroticsatisfiction.com

John Satisfy is an erotica author that specializes in fulfilling fantasies with words. His stories are written specifically with the woman's perspective in mind, but are enjoyed by both genders. Often what starts out as a simple or straightforward scene morphs into something slightly unexpected which is where part of the fun lies. Sex should not be completely predictable, neither should erotica. While some of his works may play with BDSM themes, come across in a more playful manner.

After spending his younger years traveling and living through the United States, he is currently living in the Midwest with his new wife. In his free time he loves to bake, listen to music, and take photos, finding ways to express himself with food, song, and images.

Kayla Lords http://kaylalords.com

I discovered my love of writing at age seven and my sexual fantasies long before I reached adulthood. Now instead of experiencing sexual daydreams, I write them down and publish them for others to enjoy. I write BDSM-themed erotica with a focus on Dominance and submission (D/s). I not only want to turn my readers on, but I want them to realize that D/s is more than just a kink and isn't scary or degrading. I love to blog, tweet, talk, and especially interact with my readers and followers as much as possible.

Edward Naughty
http://edwardnaughty.blogspot.com

Born in Detroit. Living, loving, and writing steamy naughty stories is my passion. Erotica and Erotic Romance are my preferred genres. I had formerly written comedy under another pen name until I got the nerve to express my naughty side. I have been told by readers that not only do they find my erotic stories interesting and hot, but they also find them humorous. Women frequently message me, expecting me to be inappropriate. They have been surprised to find out that I am really a great guy. I have been told it's sweet how shy I am. I am a gentleman and believe woman should be treated with respect. Even while I'm corn-holing them. ;)

LB Shaw www.lbshaw.blogspot.com

LB Shaw began creating whimsical stories in her head as a distraction from the sultry summers of her childhood. Afternoons during high school were spent working at a used bookstore and reading the novels that ignited her passion for writing and have inspired her ever since. She holds degrees in Biology and Paralegal Studies and worked over ten years in the animal care industry before venturing into freelance writing. After publishing the first two novels of the sexually charged Trust In Me series, she released her latest, Little Sinner, as a reflection of the darker sides of erotica. LB has recently transitioned into writing gothic fiction, sometimes infused with elements of dark humor and southern culture.

This scene is a little after the other one from last week...

So they just kissed and Sir complimented her, stating she probably had other talents in the oral realm.
“Should we test it out now, sir?”

His teeth gripped my earlobe. “You are the tease I knew you would be. I promised no sexual contact tonight.”

I whimpered. “I’d like to take care of you. Please, sir, let me take care of this.” I grinned, as it twitched under my bottom, as I pleaded.

“I have half a mind to spank you until you are sore, for being such a cock-tease.”

“But, sir, I really want to-” My hand slipped between my thighs.

What do you think is going to happen next??

If I cleaned it up a bit and added more depth, would it be a respectable piece to send to the BDSM writers con contest. I wanted to send Saving Lady J, but there is no category for switch. :( I might submit it to another publisher, because I truly think it's a great piece. Thoughts?

OK, Ok, I've held you hostage enough. Please be sure to check out my spanky friends this week!!

Self publishing is like being the Mad Hatter on Crack #advice for authors

If you don't know me, Alice in Wonderland is my favorite book of all time. ;) One of these day's I'll do it justice.
So, I was sort of laughing when someone brought up that a friend asked them what self-publishing/
indie writing entailed. First—let me insert here if someone asks that’s better than the latter…oh writing is so easy, write the thing and put it up there. It reminds me about each and every time a new writer asks me for advice on anything. I’ve had a few that said that’s too ridiculous (perhaps thinking, this girl has no idea what she’s talking about…lol).

Think of the Mad Hatter on crack…this is who you have to be.

What do you mean…all you have to do is write the story, right?

Let’s see here...hmm write the story. This is tougher for some, writers block, research, etc. My problem is the opposite. I have too many ideas and stories to keep up with!

Step two edit, step three edit, step four edit…haha, you get the idea. Too many people complain they don’t have money for an editor, well you better be damn sure you have an eagle eye and have critique partners. What is a critique partner? They are person who reads/writes in the genre you write and will read your story and edit it. I do track changes for my CP’s. Also, I have software that reads back my text. The good thing about eBooks is you can re-read it at a later date and upload a new version. And yes now that I have come along, I have found an editor. Editors: there are many different kinds of editors, find the one you need (content, grammar, etc). This is why a CP is like gold, they can tell you your “issues”.

After this is the cover, be willing to spend some money, but not an exorbitant amount. Some people spend $250 for a cover. This is crazy! I was under the naive notion that I could do my own. Um, did I mention yet that I am a control freak? It was a sloppy mess. I bought some covers from selfpubbookcovers.com and I was very happy with them. But I admit, I needed a better understanding of what sells. People clearly DO judge a book by its cover. I have made Bound for Pleasure, but not without help. I still struggled with understanding GIMP II.

Since then I have purchased the pictures for covers and had someone help me with them. I trade work in kind and basically say verbatim what I want. This isn't to say she isn't talented, I can't wait to show you one cover that blew me away. As I mentioned I think GIMP II hates me. You can't be good at everything and they sooner you realize that they better. I have been having http://www.satisfictionservices.com/ doing my covers for quite some time now.

Marketing: You need to be good with social media. Understand how they work and find circles and marketing sites on Facebook. Be sure to start with a “personal” Facebook and then an “Author” Facebook page off of that. The personal one helps you Market on other Facebook pages. Your author page is great tool for understanding your audience. A blog is another good way to market, but decide if you can keep up with it and what type of content you want on it.

Marketing is the biggest piece, growing your brand from your name to your following. People are tempted to buy followers, but why. They aren’t people, but rather robots and they don’t buy books. Also people putting “Bestselling Author” I’ve told this to a few people, make sure you are honest with your readers. Did you earn that title? Did you “sell” these books or where they free? Be sure to make that distinction.

Be sure to hype up your book before you publish it. Ask others for help, do a cover reveal, blog tour, Rafflecopter, Goodreads giveaways, there are so many things.

What not to do:

Don’t annoy the heck out of people. OMG I cannot tell you how many people I have unfriended on both Twitter and Facebook. These are SOCIAL places. Also politics and religion have no place here. You are selling books not your personal beliefs. Sure, readers love to feel a connection with you, but they don’t want to be offended.

Twitter:

Don’t say thanks for following me here’s my books in the same Tweet to me…I won’t look at it…guaranteed. AutoDM’s are the worst.

Don’t put my name in a Tweet with your marketing promo.

Facebook:

Stop promoting to the same pages every day. I try to do it once a week and I have many books. Most people in your circle are in the same groups as you. So you clutter up my notification’s feed. I see 45 notifications and 12 are from ABC person (unfriend, especially if that is the only reason you friended me). Also, don’t PM a link. A link and nothing else screams spam to me.

Damn, this girl is so mean you say. LOL Someone actually heard my whole spiel about Amazon. About certain covers and words not accepted. They said this is too hard, too much red tape and said forget it. You need to understand and be mindful of so much. I read a lot of books before I published my very first one. Arm yourself, ask questions and don’t go blindly. You will be hurting yourself in the long run.

Phew, are we ready to put the book up yet??

Learn all the places you want to pub, understand the good and bad of each. There are formatting and cover rules for each of them. Then press that button. Sigh you are done, right? Wrong! Market, get reviews and guess what…you better be working on your next book. ;)

Amazon not paying my royalties at 70%? Providing my book sales accurately? Frustration! #showmethemoney

I mean it was bad enough when they banned Taken by a Truck Driver, I made a whole stink about that censorship nonsense and got that resolved.

Now I go an look and find my two books Fantasy Encounter with a Dom and Sara's Awakening, my 2.99 books, paid at 35% royalty rate. If you are an author you know this price point means 70% royalty rate.

Confused? Me too. I saw in my last six weeks report for Amazon.com aka US)  that on one date I had a group of books paid at the 70% royalty rate and one book at the 35% royalty rate. WTF? They better not have done that prior months (my initial reaction).

So I calmly take a breath and email. I get the standard. If you sell books outside of the US you wont get the 70% royalty rate. Well no...not what I asked. Grr.

So I responded, loudly I might add. I get a bit aggravated when people half ass something when you state off the bat you are upset.

I get a very similar response not 5 minutes later...

Amazon response:
Hello Suzy,

I understand you're inquiring why you are receiving 35% for Royalties of your titles when you have chosen the 70% Royalty option for both your titles " Fantasy Encounter" and "Sara's Awakening". I have investigated your situation and would like to emphasize the following:

Although you have the 70% Royalty option selected and the sales took place on Amazon.com (United States), the 35% Royalty copies that you're referring to were sold outside of countries where the 70% Royalty Option is currently applicable.

The 70% Royalty Option is only applicable for sales to customers on Amazon.com in these sales territories:

Andorra
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brazil*
Canada
France
Germany
Italy
India*
Japan*
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Monaco
Mexico*
San Marino
Switzerland
Spain
United Kingdom (including Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man)
United States
Vatican City

Sales to other customers are not eligible at this time and will be paid based on the 35% royalty option.

I hope this helps. Thank you for using Amazon KDP.

Regards,

Leoné E
Kindle Direct Publishing
I just love the buttons, did this solve your problem? No it didn't solve my problem. "Show me the money!" Going back with "what countries are paid under the US report". Perhaps it might ring a bell? Maybe. Or maybe they are lumping other countries in (I'm an optimist, cant help giving the benefit of the doubt).
As for reporting, there is always something going on. My books seems to be a day behind. My rankings for book and authors rank don't mean too much unless it's a new release for me.

As an Amazon affiliate even others books who have sold (that I see), aren't reported in a timely fashion.

I mean, I got an extra chunk of money at the end of the year for books not reported during the year. I like the money, cause well it's my hard earned money. But I would like to see what sales and promotions work. What months are good. My tweets, posts etc, are they helpful?
Will update as information is available...

How to get a large organic #following on #Twitter

2/6/2014

So I have been bugged enough, I am spilling the beans…LOL OK, honestly, I like to help others that are struggling with something that I figured out.

How did I amass a huge organic following on Twitter?

So let’s go back to the newbie me. Mid-Feb 2013, everyone was telling me ‘you need to be on Twitter. That’s where you need to market.’ I was completely confused by this thing. I am a Facebook girl. And to be honest that has better Marketing benefits to reach readership. You find more Author / readers on Twitter. Some regular readers, but it’s really not the same. So, as I mentioned I didn’t know how to even Tweet. I knew nothing.

Ok, so I used this PDF that was free on http://www.selfpubbookcovers.com/index.php There was a small section on there to help me sort of start my way into this social media time sucker-I mean great place to market myself. Tee hee.

After about a month I had 1k followers, 2 months 2k. I was amazed and others were too. I kept saying I would make a post about it so here it is. First, I have to admit having a picture of me; a real live person probably helps.

Tips/Tricks

How do I know if I should follow them?

My “personal” ways of going about this are, look at their profile. Are they a reader, writer, do they have something in common with you. Genre is a big factor. I try to spread it out so I don’t just follow everyone in erotica, since I write in many genres.

Follow book review people. This will skew your numbers a bit, but oh well you never know who will pick up your book.

Now, here is another tidbit and it might be a little confusing. The numbers: followers vs following. Are they even going to follow you back? If the numbers are close, perhaps they might. If they have low numbers and their Twitter remarks are “hey baby you’re hot” or “here’s my newest book”. These are the first things they say to you…um no. Twitter is a SOCIAL MEDIA SITE. Remember no one wants their first introduction to be a smack in the face with your book.

Now do you always care about the numbers? No. Follow EL James or my mentor Shoshanna Evers if you want some of their followers to perhaps see you. Now, how would these follower see you? You know, on that side panel: follow these people thing-yeah that one. I don’t really follow the “untouchables” though. The anti-socials that would never respond, celebs, etc. However, Neil Perry from “The Band Perry” follows me, perhaps he thought I was cute. LOL I love music that’s no secret.

Are they a bot? Should I follow?

“I just got 1000 followers..” yeah I mark as spam…move on.

They have one tweet and followed 87 people. Nope don’t follow.

They are a locked account with no bio. Now these are tricky. I pretty much follow and find myself unfollowing most of them. Some locked accounts are people with families, others are D/s relationships and others are just, well, who knows.

Following back

There is this unwritten rule to follow back within 3 days, so try to keep pace or note in your bio.

Your Bio

I changed mine about 50 times. Work on it, tweak it, and change it when new things come up. ;) Be honest. I actually told a writer putting Bestselling Author in his bio should mean he actually “sold” the book. I think being honest with your readership is the best way to gain and keep them. He has a Bestselling book that reached #1 in free. Yay! I mean I haven’t even reached #1 in free. Just my opinion perhaps. :/

Oh and typos, if you are a writer and there are typos in your bio…yeah there’s a problem there.

What not to have on your Twitter feed! (What I don’t have)

Politics, naked pictures (unless that is what you want to promote—we all have our own thing and our own brand), and really any hot button issues. You want this to be a place for marketing your brand then keep your brand fun, happy, and interesting. No bashing or self pity party’s people. Nothing wrong with a bad day, we all need support and as a community we will be there with our shoulders.

Also I do not have Auto DM’s I hate them and I will never open a link. I delete all that.

Use all the tools you can

1. Hashtags – Twitter gives you ones in a little dropdown.

2. Use a catchy phrase not, here’s my book or here’s my Amazon page. Excite people; make them want to click on your link.

3. Picture – Use your book covers as an advertisement. Twitter has changed this up a bit, but a picture will take up space and make your Tweet stand out.

4. Spacing/objects – Don’t be annoying, but you can be crafty with spacing and objects (arrows) that are eye catching.

5. Someone comments, respond, draw more attention to your Tweet. Also each connection helps you more visible in the main feed and perhaps gains you more followers.

6. Be bold and say things like I did “Wow, I am almost at my 1k (2k or 3k) follower, I think I had like 10 to go. This person will get a free eBook of mine their choice” I tweeted things like this. I also said virtual kisses, but I didn’t tell you that. People like silliness and winning nothing. I Tweeted the heck out of the winner and they were happy. Telling everyone to follow my latest follower, therefore getting more followers. (Make sure they are a valid person not a bot)

RT - ing

I tweeted/RTed daily. I would follow and RT those that RT’ed me. I had a nice community of people. I was spending 30 minutes, soon it became and hour. Suddenly, it was reaching hours. I was doing it multiple times a day. I always left my 4-6 promotional Tweets at the top. I found my hand was hurting and it was taking up so much time that I wasn’t really doing what I wanted, writing. At this point I was at close to 4k followers.

So, I looked for a solution. I wanted to still have control over who I followed and unfortunately I RT some porn, but overall I am very happy that I am able to still Tweet additionally and never go over my limit. Previously, I had been put in jail a few times for my RT-ing an not even been allowed to post my own promotions. Now what was the sense in that?

I use Begaware, Tweetdeck, FB autoposts for me and Tribber feeds.

Auto RT sites like Roundteam, Begaware, TweetDeck, etc

Auto RT’s. I don’t recommend this to you unless you already did everything above. Get a good following going, this takes work. Buying followers, which I have heard is robots, dead accounts, etc. Isn’t adding any value to your Twitter.

I now use Begaware for auto Tweets and ReTweets. It helps me to still be able to talk to people, write and just be me! I sometimes toss a question out into Twitter and see who responds. I find out who answers and make new friends. Again you need to remind yourself it is a social media site. Ask for help sometimes you never know who will respond.

So the sites I use:

Begaware

Tweets : http://begware.com/alogin.php

RT’s: http://begware.biz/member/activate.php

The RT one is good for say the ones you want to block, porn pics for example, or perhaps larger authors that don’t RT. My mentor doesn’t RT, but I like to tweet her stuff. This puts you in the eyes of others that read her work and similar stuff that you write. ;)

TweetDeck: https://tweetdeck

I use this to set up auto posts since Begaware only allows 20 set ones. Also, I can do one’s anything new happening: a new release, a cover reveal, a blog hop, etc. Plus I do great followers or favoriters. People like spotlights shown on them.

Triberr: http://triberr.com/

Triberr is for bloggers to meet others; you need to be faithful in reblogging here. This feeds to my Twitter. I actually don’t know much about this except that it helps get your blog posts out there across Twitterdom. ;)

Sometimes I find remarks of people not reblogging “enough”, but honestly I feel like no one lives in each others lives. No one lives in my shoes. I promote the hell out of people, I don’t run and jump on Triberr daily, people would prefer if I helped them sell books (my opinion). If you do it and promote others I think that’s sufficient. And sometimes I feel like we need to learn to have more respect for other people sometimes.

Unfollowers.com

Lastly, I use this (on Twitter, it’s free) to unfollow people that don’t follow me. Again I keep book reviewers and those that might give me a larger following, but I remove people that haven’t followed me in at least 5 days. I don’t follow the 3 day rule. And anyone that unfollowed me.

I have met so many great friends and supportive people and I can only hope to help and pay it forward just a little bit. I truly hope this post helps people. Marketing takes work and time. If you don’t put effort into it like you do writing, you are honestly writing for no reason. It would be like making a lemonade stand and then setting it up inside your house and not telling a soul about it. Think about it, no one else is going to sell you better than you.

Perhaps, I will do another post about Facebook or blogging one day. But that’s for another time. Please share and comment if this was helpful.

xx Suzy
